Food & Beverage Customs Clearance FAQs

Practical guidance for food importers, FMCG distributors, and restaurateurs.

How long does FSSAI NOC take after sample collection?

Laboratory analysis typically takes 3 to 5 working days depending on the scope of chemical, microbiological, and heavy metal tests required. Once the lab uploads favorable results to FICS, customs NOC is granted electronically within 24 hours.

Can food items be stored in a customs bonded warehouse pending FSSAI clearance?

Yes. Under Section 49 of the Customs Act, if testing or clearance is expected to take extended time, cargo can be moved to a temperature-controlled public or private bonded warehouse to avoid expensive port/terminal demurrage charges.
